Introduction
Internationalisation should be conceived as a comprehensive strategy with widespread relevance for, and adapted to the multicultural aspects of society. Within this context, internationalisation strategies should be accepted and supported as an integral part of educational policies, with the aim of enriching the quality and relevance of education. This, in turn, should meet the challenges of global societies, thereby developing global citizens through academic cooperation and co-existence in a multicultural context (Wit, 2005, 454). A new managerial challenge facing higher education is the increased internationalization of education and, within that, the growing responsibilities of institutions of higher education with respect to the internationalisation of teaching and learning, as well as service delivery., (2003, 52) describes a growing interest at government level in the active development of policies, programmes and infrastructure to manage the internationalisation of higher education. Internationalisation strategies need to be linked to strategies of multiculturalisation societal processes in the higher educational sectors. The current higher education environment confirms that universities are still far away from both the transformation to international higher educational institutions, as well as the integration of an international dimension into the educational mainstream. It is asserted that the response of higher education institutions to the challenge of internationalisation has been fragmented and varied. To transform United Kingdom into one of the major players in international education, its higher education institutions need to adopt and embrace internationalisation as part of their mission and strategic focus (Etaat, 2009, 143).
