Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “Architecture” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “interior designing” of “Public Aquariums”. The research analyses difference in architecture of Aquariums from different times.

Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Aquarium centres have always been considered to be one of the major learning centres. There has been a rapid increase in the number of national calibre aquarium centres, increasing from 10 to 25 over the previous decade. Furthermore, more increase is expected. This explosion of aquariums is accompanied by a change brought in the activities of aquarium centres and the way they have started exhibiting these activities. Aquariums of today are offering more than life of underwater plant and traditional fishes. Visitors of today, look for educational and recreational experiences when they visit aquarium centres (Nora, 1992, 170-174). In accordance, numerous aquariums have started using special, distinct collections and regional themes in order to differentiate their centre and attract visitors. Certainly, aquarium centres have made apparent efforts in order to attract the maximum number of tourists by adding marine mammal exhibits including activities of seals, penguins, dolphins and whales.

1.2 History and Culture of Aquarium Centre

The Random House Dictionary has defined Aquariums as a place where aquatic animals and plants are kept and taken care of. Aquariums have been known to exist for at least 4,500 years (Ebenhöh, 1992, 21-26). The concept of aquarium came into being when people of early ages started keeping fishes in their homes besides for the sake of consuming them as food. Goldfish was the first fish to get the attention of people. The Sumerians were the first known aquarists who kept fish in artificial ponds.
