Summary

Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Howard Gardner announced a theory that changed the popular conception of intelligence. He stated that the human psyche and personality is so complex that it is impossible to measure mental abilities using IQ test or any other standardized test model. Gardner argued that every person has a different mental abilities, and thus in some areas will be handled better, while in others worse.

Earlier it was widely believed that there is only one type of intelligence that is inherited. Today, most researchers are of the opinion that there are many different types of intelligence, independent of each other.

Multiple Intelligences

Dr. Gardner has created a model of eight different types of intelligence: linguistic-verbal, logical-mathematical, spatial, physical (non-verbal), musical, interpersonal (social), intrapersonal (internal) and natural. These are termed as multiples intelligences.

Practical Intelligence

Practical intelligence sets itself apart from the traditional construct of intelligence, which is determined relatively easily by psychometric testing. The success of practical intelligence can be depicted in daily life in the active management of specific challenges, which are solved with inclusion of the existing knowledge and experience. Thus, the practical intelligence is dependent on the individual's specific situation and their environment.

EQ (Emotional Intelligence) by Gardner

According to some psychologists the emotional intelligence is an aspect of intelligence related to the ability to use, identify, understand and manage their own and others conscious emotions. The use of this form of intelligence is based on the ability to sense the feelings, aspirations and emotions of the people around us and to have a full understanding of their mood. This allows the person to orientate behavior accordingly.
