Integrated Approach of Counselling

Integrated Approach of Counselling

Introduction

This paper intends to discuss the integrated approach of counselling. Particularly it focuses on the emerging integrative practice as person-centred (humanistic) and cognitive behavioural theory (CBT). Further, to have a deep rooted understanding regarding the counselling relationship, some of Martin Buber's work is analyzed. Moreover, within the humanistic field, some Alfred Adler's work is also explored.

Discussion

Counselling

The main pillars of the counseling profession are its theories and therapies. The most popular legendary theorists are Sigmund Freud, Albert Ellis and Carl Rogers.

Effective Counseling Conditions

According to Kirschenbaum & Henderson (2006) the main three core conditions that Carl Rogers said have great significance for effective counseling are:

Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR)

Empathy

Congruence

Empathy therapy remembers, treasures the individuality and welcomes the personhood, identification of a person, spirit of the other individuals in all its common, unique and extra ordinary aspects. Empathic therapies offer an understanding, caring and strong attitude towards the emotional effort and struggle, personal growth and aspirations of the people. They encourage the person's natural human rights to liberty, life and the pursuit of happiness.

Integrative theory of Human Beings and Human Nature

Philosophical anthropology in my opinion is the study of human beings related to their nature. What humans actually are is the basic theme behind the study of human beings. In order to base my counseling theory upon the understanding of integrative theory of human beings and human nature, I will examine the philosophical anthropology from the view point of ancients describing the human nature. Relating the counseling field to the philosophical anthropology involves understanding the interpersonal relationships that exists between the humans. Humans usually feel that they can control situations that are difficult but in reality, it is difficult for them to control the worse circumstances according to their own will.

Since I have decided to implement emerging integrative practice as person centered or humanistic in relation with CBT, I assume that theory behind the human nature is that they are capable to incorporate self-improvement and they can immensely contribute to the society welfare if they decide to do so. The basic issue in which humans need counseling is regarding their tolerance levels towards each other. Humans need to understand that the society is a collective output and everyone has to contribute towards it. Respecting and recognizing the contributions of others is extremely important in order to make life better for the present and future generations.

Practicing Counseling

Counseling process varies from person to person. My most important view of counseling process starts with setting counseling aims, than basic counseling procedure is needed to be established. Moving on, relationship is important to build while recognizing the feelings and behaviors. After all this, an action plan must be made and implemented and lastly termination of relationship must be done in a positive manner.

Dealing with different clients requires a lot of patience and tolerance. The client specific action plan must be developed after analyzing the problems of the particular ...
