Executive summary

Modern society is characterized by a high degree of competitiveness. Contemporary organizations are embedded in this medium; however, the differentiation becomes a key factor in the development of their activities. The purpose of this variation is present in the activity of strategizing. The differentiation is to distinguish the product to customers, creating something that is considered unique even. The business environment today requires efforts in the pursuit of quality, which is an important factor for an organization that aims to characterize their products or services as unique. As the Information Technology (IT) is defined as a set of all activities and solutions provided by computing resources, it is necessary to make use of IT resources in an appropriate manner, i.e., it is necessary to use tools, systems or other means that do the information a competitive advantage. The new world economy based on information technology requires knowledge of organizations to collect, work, and play and manage this resource. The development and mastery of these skills will be crucial for organizations seeking a better position in the market relative to its competitors, requiring engagement in the constant search for innovation. In contrast, organizations that resist the information economy will be easily overcome by competition. Importantly, significant investments in information technology are not sufficient to generate competitive advantage. Greater ability of a business before your competitors will only be achieved through the intelligent use of IT; action will be achieved through the actual use of this strategic resource from the perspective of profitability and competitiveness (Burgelman, Christensen, & Wheelwright, 2004). This paper explains the importance of information technology in organizations.
