CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

Early perspectives on computer-mediated communication (CMC) proposed that the text-based and visually anonymous natural environment endemic to CMC needed the capability to consign wealthy communal information. Therefore, it was asserted that CMC inherently hindered interpersonal communication or even boosted the development of uninhibited impersonal interactions for example “flaming”.

More latest study has disputed this deterministic view. For demonstration, the Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects (SIDE) suggests that the visually anonymous natural environment of CMC intensifies one's sensitivity to assembly and communal persona, and how an one-by-one actions in CMC counts on the salience of the individual's assembly persona and the norms of the assembly in which the one-by-one is communicating.
