Introduction

Quality circle may be regarded as a group of volunteer composed of various workers or even students, generally under the management or guidance of their elected team member or supervisor. These groups of volunteer are trained to analyze, identify and answer work-related problems. Several studies indicate that quality control circles enhance work safety. This assignment is based on the case study “How Quality Control Circles enhance work safety: a case study” By Salaheldin, I. Salahedldin and Mohamed Zain (Salaheldin, S & Zain, 2007, pp. 229-244).

Description

The selected article explores that how quality control circles results in the improvement of work safety in a manufacturing organization at the Middle Eastern developing country. The organization selected as the case study is “Qasco”, a steel mill at the State of Qatar. The primary aim is to implement quality control circles for the enhancement of Direct Reduction Furnace Zone work safety. Before the critical analysis of the research article it is necessary to understand the meaning of quality control circles and its importance for Qasco steel mill Qatar.

Quality Control Circles (QCC)

Quality control circles (QCC) may be defined as a group of people usually twelve working in a team to investigate, analyze, identify and resolve their work related concerns or problems. Work place safety including workers safety is among the most important concerns at any organization especially at steel mills.

The most important advantages or benefits of Quality Control Circles (QCC) involve: they develop as well as involve workers, and may openly speak to concerns in areas or subjects such as productivity, quality, costs, competence, effectiveness, staff turnover, non-attendance and competition in addition to grievances (Wadsworth et.al, 2002). In addition, the techniques and methods also produce other advantages involving helping: workers study to effort towards a frequent objective with people at various stages and various parts of firm, consequently dropping the obstacles of communication obstructions between staff and managers; raise in job approval and approval and reduction in aggravation between them; grow the levels of abilities and skills of members; and augment their own environmental power.

Quality Control Circles in workplace safety

Safety of the worker is among the most significant foundations or sources of risk. Workers or employees may not be efficiently encouraged or motivated if they consider that they are accomplishing their jobs in a dangerous and insecure environment. More significantly, safety at work is among the most important methods used to analyze a manufacturing firm's good layout (Flynn et.al., 1994, pp. 339-366). A productive and resourceful safety control program requires the acceptance, pervading and use of safety culture within firms. Moreover, workers and staff must be skilled and trained in proper attitudes and procedures, and they may definitely add or add to a decrease in risks by pointing out if risks or dangers exist in the place of work to the organization (Sundstorm et.al,. 1990, pp. 120).
