"In Another Country" Ernest Hemingway

Life is beautiful. But, we also have heard that life is not a bed of roses. It shows us scores of ups and downs and makes us face reality. One of the bitter truth and reality of life is that it has to end someday at some point and this end of life is known as death. Death is a phenomenon that is considered as most intriguing element to human beings. There are several reasons that drive the quest of human being to know more about death. One more reason that makes the fact of death intriguing is its uncertainty. Relation of uncertainty with death is very obvious. Uncertainty can be linked with death in more than one ways. Uncertainty is related to death with respect to the time and mode of death. This is the reason death features as the theme of many different poems and stories.

The short story, “In another Country,” is written by Earnest Hemingway. This story revolves around an American soldier who has been wounded and is in Milan, Italy. The American soldier is the narrator of the story. The soldier is being treated in a hospital through different machines every afternoon. The doctor of the wounded soldier is very optimistic about his recovery. "You are a fortunate young man," the doctor explains to the wounded soldier and promises him that the injury of his leg and knee will be fully recovered and he will be able to play football once again. The prognosis of the physician for another patient is dubious. The patient is suffering from a shriveled hand and is receiving major treatments through the machines of the hospitals.
