Importance of Network Security in Global World

Introduction

Computer Networking and systems used for communication play a vital role in the global world of communication and networks. This is because we live in a modern society which will not survive without them. This can be explained from the fact related to the internet, which is the paradigm of networks that has further evolved in to a virtual environment used globally and has become an influential part of our lives. In our modern society, our day to day communication, leisure activities, entertainment and commerce are all on network based systems in some way or other. Disturbance of these services, it comes at a cost which is difficult to measure but is very vast for sure. Taking for an example the worm named Code Red, took almost 360,000 servers by surprise in 2001, which resulted in millions of dollars worth of loss around the globe in the cleanup of systems and productivity losses (Lemos, 2013).

The security of computers and different networks has come to a grand concern as they have come out of professional and research environments trained professionals operate them and use them for specific tasks. Use of such systems generated security related problems after their introduction in the general public and communication use them for multi purposes, entertainment and business. General population uses this system that is not professionals and has no idea of the limitation of the systems and network. Other than untrained professionals there is no shortage of people and groups who do malicious activities, which can exploit the networks system's weaknesses and for unlawful financial gains (Alpcan & Bas¸ar, 2011).

Despite the efforts being made in the research for network security and its utmost importance, network security is the major concern. The reason for this is that the networked systems are interconnected and very complex in nature, due to this they are not particularly easily managed and controlled by their proper trained users. A simple user has very inadequate capabilities to observe the user interface is particularly easy. The automated systems have a process running in the background which is not feasible to be displayed to the user. This process carries out the main communication with other systems across the network. For example, the system clock, which is to the user, is being updated from a server located on the web, its process is running in the background and continuously updates the time from anywhere in the world (Alpcan & Bas¸ar,2011).

Network technology and computer system are the highly integral part of many applications. With these applications come the network's security and it is crucial. As network security is extremely essential in the upcoming computer networks, there are fewer methods, used to provide security to the network (Alpcan & Bas¸ar,2011).
