Implement Evidence Based Practices to Prevent CAUTI

Introduction

The quality and safety education for nurses, also known as QSEN is a national project to enhance and transform nursing education for the betterment of quality and safety competencies. It is very important for the maintenance of safety concerns to enhance the knowledge and skills of nurses in clinical settings. It is essential to give an extra attention towards safety issues (McKown, McKeon, & Webb, 2011).

There are a number of surgical and clinical procedures, in which nurses can be directly affected due to non-compliance. Indwelling catheter is considered as a very common and important procedure in hospital settings. It is a placement of tube into the bladder, which is used to drain urine from the body into a bag. Urinary catheterization is usually done after any major surgical procedure. Knowledge and skills are required to prevent urinary tract infection associated to catheter indwelling (Salamon & Lisa, 2009).

Discussion

Quality and Safety Education

Nursing course was redesigned by using teaching strategies and organizing framework. According to these standards, there are six competencies or criteria in QSEN which are essential for practice. These six competencies include teamwork and collaboration, quality improvement, patient-centered care, evidence based practice, informatics and safety. Knowledge, skills and attitudes are associated with each criterion of QSEN standards. They are considered as important factors to enhance the quality and safety while different clinical and surgical procedures. These competencies are essential because they are identifying nursing competencies and professional roles. They are used to develop awareness of safety and quality in health care system. Nurses having a strong base of patient safety and quality are able to work in more complex health care environment (Gayle, Gail & Amy, 2009).

Quality Improvement

Quality improvement can be accessed through updating nursing policies and procedures. Quality and safety education updated quality improvements to monitor the results of health care. This competency recommends that nursing and other health professions students are a part of health care system. Continuous quality improvements are necessary in health care system for quality health care (Gayle, Gail & Amy, 2009).

Evidence-Based Practice

QSEN recommends that it will be the best if the practice is accompanied with evidence and researches in health care settings. QSEN describes that evidence based practice should include research evidence, clinical expertise and patients values. Professionals should enhance their knowledge and skills through evidence based practice. Concept of evidence based practice should be values to determine best clinical practice. Nursing skills and values should be modified with the help of evidence based practice. It is an appropriate teaching strategy, so all the professionals of nursing discipline should follow these strategies to enhance quality health care (Gayle, Gail & Amy, 2009).
