CHAPTER 03: METHODOLOGY

Research Methodology

In order to conduct this study, quantitative research methodology has been adopted. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of sexual abuse on women service users. In order to evaluate the mental health and condition of women service users, this research will rely on objective data and facts. Therefore, quantitative research methodology has been chosen for the study.

Quantitative research has been defined in different ways by different researchers. According to one of the definitions, quantitative research involves the numerical representation o data for the purpose of explaining a phenomenon. Quantitative research can be used in different research settings including biology, psychology, sociology, and geology (Smith, 2008, pp. 15).

According to another definition, quantitative research is a social research that involves empirical methods of investigation. An empirical statement can be defined as a descriptive statement about what a case is like is the real world (Wienclaw, 2008, pp. 10). A very precise definition of quantitative research has been presented by Creswell (2003). According to Creswell, quantitative research is a methodology that involves explaining a phenomenon by colleting numerical data. The data gathered in this methodology is analyzed through mathematical models. There are different reasons due to which quantitative research is used. The first reason is to find a quantitative answer of a question. Quantitative research is also used in order to study numerical change (Felitti et al, 2001, pp. 53).

There are different methods involved in quantitative research. These methods include surveys, interviews, case studies, and observations. For conducting this study, the observational method has been selected.

Quantitative Research in Healthcare

Quantitative research is now recognized widely in healthcare settings. The use of quantitative research provides several benefits in healthcare studies. The methodology is useful in producing factual and reliable data. In healthcare studies, the use of quantitative methodology allows the researcher to study the outcomes of an intervention, drug or treatment. The observed outcomes, therefore, provide objective results that can be generalized to a larger population (Creswell, 2003, pp. 60).

Randomized Control Trials

Case-control and cohort studies are also known as observational studies. In this research method, the role of the researcher is to observe the outcome of different kinds of exposures. The most powerful kind of study is randomized controlled trial. The methodology of randomized control trials has been used since 600 B.C. Randomized controlled trial is one of the most powerful tools of research (Franklin, 2012, pp.89).

Randomized controlled trial is a simple yet powerful tool of research. This is a study in which participants are allocated randomly to receive any clinical intervention. In this study, the intervention will be in the form of treatment of sexual abuse victims. In most of the cases, the term intervention is used to refer to medical treatment. However, it can be used to refer ...
