Impact of HIV/AIDS In Relation To Economic Development of KENYA: A CASE STUDY



ABSTRACT

This research has investigated the impact of HIV/AIDS in relation to economic development of Kenya. The study intended to evaluate the consequences of HIV/AIDS on the growth of the economy of republic of Kenya. The objectives were to review the occurrence of HIV/AIDS in Kenya, investigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the economy of Kenya in particular and to find out if there was any negative or positive correlation between HIV/AIDS and economic growth. The study was based on a general literature review of peer reviewed materials including journals, articles, conference papers and searches from databases using the internet and university libraries. It was observed that although the prevalence of the HIV/AIDS in Kenya was said to be declining, the disease had significant economic impact on most sectors of Kenya economy. There was the fact that lean financial resources of Kenya were been channelled into the fight against HIV/AIDS instead of establishing economically yielding developmental programme. From the analysis of the research negative correlation between HIV/AIDS and economic growth of the Kenya was found. It was the opinion of the author that all hands must be on deck in fighting both medical and economic challenges associated with HIV/AIDS.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

To understand the purpose of this study, it will not be out of set to introduce briefly, the meaning and nature of HIV/AIDS to enable proper comprehension of the research motive.

“The Immunodeficiency syndrome also known as (AIDS) is a deadly disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV is a Lenti virus within the family Retroviridae” (Dubey, & Maheshwari, 2005). It has been reported in every country in the world; however, parts of Africa and Asia were more affected by the disease (Talaro, & Talaro, 2002). “HIV is characterized by progressive impairment of the cellular immune system of infected individuals leading to the decline in the CD4 lymphocyte count and paves the way for opportunistic infection resulting to full blown AIDS" -Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (Cheesbrough, 2002). It should be noted that at the late stage of HIV Infection a person is said to have AIDS, at the last stage of HIV immune system of a person is highly damaged due to which it becomes difficult to fight with cancers and various other disease (Barnett, & Blaikie, 1992). Before the development of antiviral medication, within few years HIV can develop itself into AID but 1990s with the introduction of highly active medications a person can live a long life with HIV (Barnett, & Blaikie, 1992).
