CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY

This doctoral study takes a quantitative approach to examine the relationship between CEO compensation and firm performance amongst multinational companies. This chapter describes the methodological approach undertaken.

Research design

This doctoral study will rely on the secondary (archival) data from Compustat, Forbes and EDGAR (the Electronic Data-Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system). Secondary data is appropriate for this type of study - it is generally considered to be both valid and reliable Du and Ti (2011). Quantitative approach will be used as a methodological approach. A non-experimental, exploratory, correlational research design will be employed. This type of research design was used by the majority of the compensation research discussed in chapter 2 (Balkin and Gomez-Mejia, 1987; Cordeiro and Veliyath, 2003; Deckop, 1988; Eaton and Rosen, 1983; Finkelstein and Boyd, 1998; Rajagopalan and Prescott, 1990). This type of research seeks to examine the relationship between a set of variables and seeks to explain changes in independent variables as a function of dependent, regressor variables.

Data collection procedures

The study's design will rely on the secondary data, or archival research. In this type of research the researcher is one step removed from reality that he/she is attempting to study. Both, the pay data and the CEO compensation data exist ...
