CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Overview of the Chapter

This research paper is focused on determining the impact of educational intervention on fall rates. This is the prime topic that will be covered in this research study through drawing on the data that will be gathered conducting the research at a local hospital in New England; the permission for which will be sought from IRB at Regis College as well as the local hospital where the research study will be carried out. For the reliability and validity of the impact assessment of educational intervention to be detected, it is imperative for the comparison to be undertaken between the impact that will be registered by two floors or units of the hospital where the study will be conducted. Thus as a result of this, the comparison will be undertaken between the two units (floors) of the hospital where the study will be conducted, those two units being Orthopedic unit and Medicine unit. This comparison will subsequently indicate the impact of educational intervention on fall rates in a more comprehensive way, and this impact will reflect on the validity and reliability of the intervention techniques as well as on the more effective use of the research methodology.

Problem

The problem to address which this study is undertaken is the increasing fall rates, for the minimization of which effective intervention strategies and approaches are required. This study will focus on the efficacy of educational intervention strategy in minimizing the fall rates to enhance patient care and ensure the provision of quality health care and life. This problem is important to be studied and it is imperative to conduct a research study on it since it is considered as one among major health problems, predominantly among older adults. In the US alone, one in every 3 older adults over 65 years, experiences at least one fall in a year (Blake Morgan, Bendall, Dallosso, Ebrahim, Arie, Fentem and Bassey, 1988, pp. 369). This rate does not remain consistent with the increasing age, rather the rate increases to 1 in every 2 older adults with age being above 80 years (O'Loughlin, Robitaille, Boivin and Suissa, 1993, pp. 347). Furthermore, the importance of this topic and the educational intervention that will be studied in the research could also be reflected in the world wide statistics and implications of the fall, which indicates that older adults above 70 years of age; and particularly the women and females in that lot, are subjected to substantially higher mortality rate as a consequence of the fall they encounter as opposed to younger people (Stevens and Olson, 2000, pp. 7).

Background

The severity and complications that comes attached with a fall increases with the increase in age. Now although, age is not the prime descriptor of severe ...
