Immigration in EU

Introduction

This article deals with the issue of immigration and internal liberalization of the cross border mobility along with the exercising a strict control for the external borders. This article has dealt with the policy of European Union to not only select citizens of EU but also those immigrants who could contribute to increasing the economic value of EU. In going for this measure, the EU has implemented a protectionist immigration policy that is the product of fear. The article explains the reasons behind this fear stating it to be mainly the result of fearing for economic loss or security issues. Another important reason behind this fear is that the community fears losing it identity on account of strangers entering its territory. These fears are thus manifested in the politicization of protectionist measures where by indifference is shown to the situation for those belonging to outside borders. After highlighting these fears, the article goes on to elaborate as its central argument how the policy of resorting to a “gated community” amidst these perceived threats is futile, and how it contributes to “global inequality and segregation.” The article carries a tone that is sympathetic to the case of the immigrants and provides considerable support to the efforts of those people outside the boundaries of EU who are desirous of immigrating to the EU zone.

Discussion

The author has pointed out doubts towards the contrasting policy of the EU with respect to immigrants belonging to EU and those belonging to the outside borders. He points out that the modernized policy to contain asylum seekers and others involved in illegal immigration along with the policy of allowing citizens of member states to move porously would be difficult to manage combined. This argument seems dubious as any country in the world would like to effectively curb illegal immigration. Also they would prefer to have nationals from countries with which they share a common ideology rather than aliens from a completely diverse culture. This is the policy that countries all over the world follow. Therefore, these two diverse policies of the EU are not without justification. However, the claim that it would be difficult to sustain them in the long run is not without evidence. Regardless of the results, the EU would still prefer to pursue this policy while maintaining sure that the balance created due to lack of labor, especially skilled labor that could contribute positively to the economic value of EU is employed.

What the writer maybe correct in arguing that the fear that runs through the EU of losing the comfort zone along with own identity and public security can be over exaggerated. This indeed has resulted in the fortification of Europe, what has been a failure to realize that these fears can well account for losing the influx and flow of immigrants that can be of considerable economic value to the EU zone. This leaves the policies related to cross border politics questionable.
