Abstract

Illegal immigration till today serves as an unresolved issue in US territory. The illegal immigrants are a threat to the US economy and security. These illegal immigrants exploit the economy of the country with the consumption of goods and services. The major threat of illegal immigrants is the unavailable information about them. The intentions with which they come to the US territory are unknown. This threat, especially after the 9/11 attack, has made the country more susceptible towards terrorism.

The rationale of this paper is to examine the negative effects and consequences of illegal immigration in US and how it affects the country economically and in terms of security.

Introduction

America has always served as the land of opportunities for the people around the world. Different people seek ways to come and settle in the country where the Americans promise to provide freedom of living along with many economic opportunities. This has encouraged illegal immigration towards the country. The US border that is open from the Canadian and Mexican region is an open gate for the illegal immigrants to reach US territory. These immigrants cross the border for different intentions and reasons. Some wants to lead and start a better life, some trespasses with involvement in criminal activities while other flees from other countries to avoid being caught. Many laws have been enforced in the country to discourage this form of immigration in the country for it has increased the crime ratio and unfair authority to be used by the immigrants to live in the country illegally.

Illegal immigration provides a gateway to illicit and criminal activities in the US territory.

Discussion

Not every illegal immigrants crossing the US border wishes to attain the freedom and opportunities provided by the Americans. Many illegal immigrants who step on the American soil are often involved in criminal and illicit activities. This has served as another reason of increasing crime rate in the country. The immigrants who cross the border illegally violate the law of immigration. The violation of law in itself is a crime and the immigrants with a criminal record or no criminal record automatically commits a crime with the violation of law of immigration. It is considered by the Americans that to stay in US as an undocumented citizen is a crime in itself.

Illegal Immigrants and low Crime

According to a lot of surveys made, it was observed that the illegal immigrants were less likely to be involved in the criminal activities as compared to the citizens of US. They even refrained from filing any complain against homicide and other crimes with the fear of getting deport from the country. The crime rate observed in the more concentrated regions with the illegal immigrants showed low crime rate.
