Introduction

Segregation has been prevailing in USA since decades. The earliest traces of segregation can be seen in form of residential segregation, where individuals belonging to a particular ethnicity live in some specific area. History shows that residential segregation among African-Americans and whites was enforced by law in many cities of USA, however, this law ended in 1948 and regardless of this fact, residential segregation persisted in the region (www.northcarolinahistory.org).

Segregation in the southern United States

Racial segregation in USA has resulted from the efforts made by the white Americans to keep African Americans in a subordinate status. They did this by restricting the access of African Americans to the facilities provided by the government fro public use. They wanted to be dominant and neglected that all should have equal rights. History shows that when the African Americans lived as slaves, most of them resided in the southern areas, especially the villages. Segregation could be clearly experienced as the whites did not bind with them. Also, before the beginning of the civil war, segregation was clearly evident in the cities including the northern and the southern regions. Regardless that the African Americans and the whites lived in nearby areas, the isolation among the groups made there contact to be very rare. Also the people who lived in cities also experienced isolation in various forms. In 1857, a decision by court on a case declared that African Americans were not U.S. citizens. After these decisions, the issues for the African Americans increased. The Americans living in the northern areas did not allow the blacks to use public transport. They did not let them enter in buses except if they were working as a servant in a hotel ...
