Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Abstract

Hybrid electric vehicles are nowadays quite popular. Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by a combination of combustion engine and electric motor together with battery. A hybrid electric vehicle is a combination of two systems, which in turn consume different energy sources. One system is the electrical power generator, which consists of an internal combustion engine of high efficiency, combined with flywheels, electric batteries or ultra capacitors. The other system consists of the electrical battery and the motor-generator mounted on wheels. The overall performance of HEV is much better as compare to the conventional vehicles. HEVs are quite popular among the people as these are environment friendly.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Introduction

Hybrid electric vehicles are quite popular nowadays. The hybrid electric vehicles combine the benefits of vehicles with internal combustion engine and benefits of electric motors. These vehicles may have different architectures to achieve various objectives such as a reduction in fuel consumption or the increase in power. These vehicles may be zero emission in the city and highway, use a combination of heat engine / electric and / or heat engine. Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by a combination of combustion engine and electric motor together with battery. Basic energy source is the fuel and the combustion engine (Peterson, 2010). The principle of hybrid drive corresponds to the combination of two power sources, embedded in the vehicle, for supplying the energy necessary for traction. One source is a battery that can store electrical energy and restores it to the electric motor. The other source is a fuel tank which feeds a heat engine that can drive the wheels directly or provide mechanical energy to an electric generator. The coupling of the two systems in a vehicle may take place in three different ways: a serial hybrid is only the electric motor for propelling charge. The internal combustion engine produced by a generator current that is either directly supplied to the electric motor, or temporarily stored in a battery. In contrast, in a parallel hybrids are both responsible for the propulsion engines and, depending on the operating condition of the vehicle, to varying degrees used to drive up to the sole use of one of the two engines. Combinations of hybrid and power-split hybrids combine the serial and parallels operation mode depending on the driving conditions to achieve even greater efficiency of the overall system.

This paper also discusses the technological specification and improvement in the hybrid electric vehicles which are nowadays very popular as they are considered environment friendly.

Literature Review

The vision of the hybrid application was accompanied by the automotive industry for decades. The use of this type of drive required a lot of new technology and overcome many problems, among which perhaps the biggest was the high price. The first company, which has produced mass-produced hybrid car, is a Toyota, which in 1997 introduced the first generation Prius. Today we can say that the car ahead of his ...
