Introduction

In this paper I will be sharing my experience of a museum visit. The museum I chose for this part of my project if Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum, in Atlanta, Georgia. The reason I chose this museum is its significance with one of the most important event in the history of United States, the Civil War. Atlanta Cyclorama has a collection of impressive centerpieces and paintings on the battle of Atlanta fought on July 22, 1864. The museum installation is composed of two floors which display weapons, artifacts, photographs and uniforms. The Atlanta Cyclorama Museum is located at 800 SE Cherokee Avenue in Grant Park. I visited the museum last Thursday (June 7th, 2012) between 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. I was accompanied with a group of eight and a guide who provided us brief discussion of every artifact in the museum. The tickets prices are comparatively cheaper i.e. $ 10 for adults and $ 8 for ages 4-12. It was a wonderful experience which provided me an opportunity to learn about the history of Atlanta and the Civil War. Following is the response of the visit and study I conducted on history and culture.

History and Culture

After the Civil War, artists were commissioned to paint large murals commemorating battle scenes, called cycloramas, derived from the Greek words kyklos (circular) and horama (a view), they were large, 360-degree paintings that surrounded the viewing area and were housed in round buildings. Some credit an Irish prisoner with inventing the concept in 1788. After the Civil War, several hundred cycloramas were painted and shown in Europe and North America.
