Definitions

Malingering

Claudia's Case

The case that I have researched on the web relative to recovered memories showed how the childhood abuse memories are recovered. This case revolves around a girl Claudia, who got connected to a group of therapy for the incest survivors, the memories of sexual abuse that she experienced in the childhood by her brother came to her mind. It was disclosed by Claudia in front of the group members that, by the time she was four years old, her brother had frequently handcuffed her, and burned her with cigarettes and even stressed her to surrender herself to numerous sexual attempts.

The incident stopped soon after when her brother got admitted to army and eventually died in Vietnam combat more than fifteen years prior to her memory recovery. Her parents left the belongings of his brother and his room as it is and they did not even touch or displace anything since then. When Claudia returned back to home from the hospital, she explored the entire room and found those handcuffs, a huge collection of pornography and one diary in the closet.

In her diary, she noticed that her brother had planned and recorded what he named the sexual attempts with this sister (Brower, 1993). The state in which memory has been resisted unconsciously by a person because of the level of stress induced and trauma enclosed in the memory is called as repressed memory. Though, the person is unable to make a memory recall, it can disturb their consciousness. In the domain of psychology, the presence of repressed memory is an arguable issue, few studies have also revealed that it can appear in trauma victims; whereas, others do not agree with this.

As per numerous psychologists, therapy is the most feasible solution available for getting rid of the repressed memories. Different other psychologists suggest that it is a phenomenon by which fake memories are produced and combination of external influences and real memories.
