Introduction

The Holy Spirit can be viewed in six diverse manners. John brings this before us in his Gospel. There are various, significant teachings about the Holy Spirit that are fully packed in the Gospel of John. The Gospel of John puts forward the coming of Jesus as the vital event for the attainment of the expression of the Holy Spirit that was predicted by the prophets of the Old Testament. Each reference that will be provided in this report will fall under these six categories. In the Gospel of John, these six chapters are interpreted as follows.

Chapter 1 includes the baptism of the Holy Spirit; chapter 3 covers the gift of life by the Holy Spirit; chapter 4 comprises of the description, by the gift of the Spirit; Chapter 7 of the Gospel of John includes the stream of living water, and chapters 14 to 16 cover the other Counselor that is also referred to as the Paraclete passages. In the end, Chapter 20 covers the breath of life by the Holy Spirit. As we begin our study of the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John, and the views of John, we will come to realize that it has a direct connection to the Old Testament and to the fulfillment of prophecy.

Gospel of John is full of evidences that the Holy Spirit has promised His people to send His messengers as His help for them.

Discussion

More than any other Gospel, the Gospel of John has a vast number of teachings of the Holy Spirit. The term that is used for the Holy Spirit in the gospel of John is “Parakletos”, which means “helping presence”. Prior to discussing John's views about the Holy Spirit, the meaning of “holy” and “spirit” should be made clear. The word “holy” is simpler in meaning than the meaning of spirit. The meaning of “holy” in Hebrew is “Qadowsh” which means a saint or sacred. The meaning of “spirit” in Greek is “pneuma” which means the personality of the Holy Spirit.

The translation that has been referred for the discussion on the view of John of the Holy Spirit is the American Standard Version Bible. The American Standard Version is basically a revision of the King James Version of the Holy Bible. This translation of the Holy Bible has been used to discuss the view of John about the Holy Spirit because this translated version of the Holy Bible provides a detailed text of the words of the Holy Bible in an easy to understand manner.
