HIV/AIDS

Overview from Biopsychosocial Perspective

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the inability of the immune system to fight infections and other disease processes. AIDS is not a consequence of an inherited disorder, but a result of exposure to HIV infection, which facilitates the development of new opportunistic infections, tumors and other processes. The virus remains dormant, and destroys a type of lymphocytes, cells that defend the body's immune system (Bauer, 2007). Faced with the increasing incidence of resistance and lack of access to antiviral drugs work on the development of a vaccine against AIDS has been a surge of interest.
