History of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma

The Seminole persons began in Florida and were part of the Muscogee Creek Confederacy. They are the descendants of Creek Apalache and Apalachicola, and furthermore African-American peoples, who discovered refuge from European-American encroachment in the swamps of to the north Florida in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The War of 1812 and subsequent warfare initiated a large boost in immigration of Muscogee Creek persons into Seminole lands. The 1823 community of Seminoles was approximated at 5000, but three of the bloodiest conflicts battled by the US government destroyed the Seminole population: the First Seminole War of 1817-18, the Second Seminole War of 1835-42, and the Third Seminole War of 1855-58. During this bloodshed, most of the tribe relocated to Indian Territory, following the marking of the Treaty of Payne's Landing in 1832. The first Seminoles reached in Indian Territory in 1832, and by 1842, 3612 Seminoles resolved in the west. The Seminoles residual in Florida profited their own booking in the early 20th century.

The Seminoles in Indian Territory were confined to the Muscogee Creek Reservation and compelled to pursue their laws. Two musicians of Seminoles distressed by this position left for Mexico in 1849, directed by John Horse and Wild Cat. Finally in 1856, the United States permitted the Seminole to rule their own booking, in what is now Seminole County, Oklahoma.

After the tribal government was dismantled by the Curtis Act of 1898 and tribal countries were broken up by the Dawes Allotment Act of 1887, the tribe was finally adept to refurbish its government under the Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act and retrieve jurisdiction over its land in 1935. In 1970 the tribal assembly reorganized to more nearly pursue customary Seminole government structure.

For almost 20 year s, the Seminoles denied to reside with and under the Muscogee Creek government, in 1856, a treaty were made with the Muscogee Creeks and the Federal government setting up the first Seminole Nation in Oklahoma. This territory, identified as an unaligned territory inside the United States and under its defense, comprised of the land between the South Canadian River and North Canadian River enclosed on the East by a line where the present town of Tecumseh OK now lives, and on the west by the western boundary of the United States (in 1856), which was the 100th meridian.

The Seminoles, under the authority of Chief John Jumper, moved to their new territory and established a community renowned as the Green Head Prairie. An assembly dwelling was established about two miles north and two miles west of the agency. After this town was made and the dwellings were well established, the War Between the States erupted and the Seminoles as well as other constituents of the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, & Muskogee Creek), took up arms and battled one against the other.
