During the Jazz Age, Charlie lived abundantly, giving thousands of francs to orchestras and hundreds of francs to doormen. The lifestyle of Charlie is similar to the rich Americans livelihood in the middle of 1920s. Charlie's alcoholism grounded him in a health resort, just as the stock market crashed. The depiction of history and Charlie's life, writer makes Charlie a diplomat of an entire age.
