Introduction

Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus was also known as Caligula, a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, was the third emperor of Rome, ruling between 37 and 41 AD. He was the son of Germanicus and Agrippina Maggiore. At 25 years of age he took over the throne through an imposed the murder Twin and Tiberius.

Caligula encountered series of events in relation to the history of Senate and politics within his era. He spend huge sum in order to develop the infra structure and development of city of Rome. He planted lake fleets, in order to beautify Rome, and brought the obelisk of the Vatican City. He developed the substantial continuity in business in the East and produced foreign policies.

The research paper is based on the historical analysis of the life and career of Caligula throughout the time. The main focus of the research is on the political and historical crisis that Caligula had to go through. The research is divided into two parts where the first part will discover the personal history of Caligula in detailed way. The second part will follow up with the conspiracies, career and political development made by Caligula in the city of Rome.

The tragic end of Caligula was through the murder conducted by the political alliances.

Family and Early Life

Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus was born in Antium near Anzio, on August 31 to 12. Caligula was the third of six surviving children of the marriage of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder. He had 2 brothers (Nero and Drusus), and his 3 sisters Julia Livilla, Drusilla and Agripinilla. He was a paternal nephew of the Claudius, who became the future emperor after Gaius (Erskine, 1990).

His father Germanicus, was a well-known associate of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, which is regarded as one of the greatest generals of the Roman Empire. He was the son of Nero Claudius Drusus and Antonia Minor, and grandson of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia, and great-nephew and adopted son of Augustus.

Gaius Mother Agrippina, was the daughter of Agrippa Vipsanio and Julia Major, and the granddaughter of Augustus and Scriboni. Gaius had the prominent family structure and representation, which helped him to be the leader.

The brothers of Gaius were arrested and accused of plotting the murder against the Tiberius and were went to exile along with their mother. They all were starved to death as a punishment.

Gaius gave his three sisters very honor and he included the names of his sisters in the ruling oath of empire. His favorite sister was Drusilla and Further his sisters were considered as ruthless and viscous ladies. They tried to kill their brother and his heir for the sake of rule and jealousy.

Youth
