On 30 March 1972 the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV, North Vietnam) launched a three-prong invasion of the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, South Vietnam) with 14 divisions (120,000 men) of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN, or NVA, North Vietnamese Army), supported by 80,000 Viet Cong (VC) main and irregular forces and 200 Soviet-built tanks. The Nguyen Hue Offensive (also known as the Spring, or Easter, Offensive) of 30 March-6 September 1972 was the largest such invasion since World War II.
