Discussion forum: the hiring process

My name is XYZ and I have been working part time in the ABC hospital for the past three years in the capacity of a nurse. It is not a very large hospital with staff not exceeding 100 employees. The experience at ABC hospital has been a pleasant one so far as I have gained a very valuable experience. I wanted to know more about the hiring process at my hospital so I made an appointment with the HR manager Mr. TRY and discussed the HR policies and issues associated with the process. Mr. TRY has been working in the ABC hospital for the last six years and has deep insight into the entire recruitment process.

The discussion began with me asking about the hiring policies at the hospital. Mr. TRY replied that hiring process at the hospital requires a very strict screening of the applications and ensuring that only the right candidates with required qualification and skill set are selected. The hiring process starts when a vacancy occurs and all the prospective candidates are informed through advertisement. After we receive all the applications, our online applicant tracking system is used to manage job applications all the applications are the screened by scanning the resume and those applications that do not match the specifications are rejected and only those that are not rejected in the initial screening remain. These remaining candidates now require interaction which is done by asking them to submit a sample, a written exercise or other supplemental material relevant to the position. These are known as talent assessment tests and are done to identify the best match for the concerned position. Many companies do this assessment after the interviews but we here do this before the interview.

It is then the stage for the interviews and the initial interview is done by the hiring manager on the phone. These are done to obtain further information about the prospective candidates and to find out whether the selected candidates are right fit for the job or not. Then the qualified candidates are invited for in person interviews and then the qualified candidates are offered employment. The entire advisement expense and other expenses incurred are approved by the finance department and then implemented. After this briefing of the hiring procedure, I inquired about any legal or ethical issues that might arise during interviews.

Mr. TRY replied that discrimination on the basis of race, color, age, gender is prohibited by law and it is taken care of during all phases of employment (Muxlow, 2009). Any violation of any of the law might lead to serious consequences. For instance even a harmless and simple question “when did you graduate from high school” can result in violation of Age discrimination in employment act (ADEA) (McReynolds, 2012). Some other laws preventing the rights of employees include American with disability act, Civil rights act of 1991, and rehabilitation act of 1793 and so ...
