Herpes Simplex: Definition of the condition

The herpes simplex virus contains several strains of viruses of the family of herpes viruses which can cause various infections in humans (Harknett 1994). The most common are the cause of cold sores, and genital herpes, which are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) respectively.
