Hemoglobin-Oxygen Saturation Curve

Introduction

Hemoglobin (Hb) is the component of red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a protein that carries oxygen. It is composed of Heme molecules that contain iron, surrounded by Globin (protein). Every Hb molecule comprised of globin chains (Sankaran & Orkin, 2013). When partial pressure of oxygen is low the oxygen is release from the tissues. In such condition hemoglobin has low affinity for oxygen binding. Other aspects may also cause further decrease in the hemoglobin affinity for the molecules of oxygen, i.e. lower saturation of oxygen in accordance with the given partial pressure of oxygen.
