Heart Functions

The heart is the organ that pushes the blood to all parts of the body. It consists essentially of a muscle, the myocardium, which is responsible for its rhythmic movements. The myocardium is coated by an outer membrane, the pericardium (Wellens, 1976). The heart has four chambers: two atria and two ventricles.
