Healthcare Disparities and LGBT

Problem Statement

“Do Healthcare Disparities Exist for LGBT Patients?”

The problem statement is aimed at analyzing the healthcare disparities associated with the LGBT group (Lesbian, Gays, Bi-sexual and Transexual). There are many people who believe that the LGBT group is rightly deprived of medical attention in various manners. However, due to the fact that LGBT are also human beings, most people are against the idea of treating LGBT differently.

Overview of the Study

LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) present unique challenges to physicians who treat them. Some 44 medical schools reported that they spend little time learning the contents related to the issues of LGBT during clinical and preclinical programs (Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health Issues and Research Gaps and Opportunities, 2011). Perhaps most surprising is that 70% evaluated their own program in this area as fair, poor or very poor (Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health Issues, 2011). "That tells us that there is some awareness that programs related to the LGBT community can be improved," said Leslie Stewart, one of the authors (Shankle, 2006). In this paper we describe briefly the impact of social determinants of health in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) as a group marginalized and discriminated against. Although all determinants are related to the population focus of this exhibition, for purposes of only time will point out where they have greatest impact on this population (Shankle, 2006).

There is a belief that sexual orientation, other than heterosexual orientation, brings with it many risks to human health. This is due to sexual relations between persons of the same sex, which has put LGBT (Lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender and transsexual) to a high risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, physical injuries and mental disorders (Shankle, 2006). Apart from that, lack of acceptance of different orientation by family and society has a direct effect on the problems of people with different orientations. Moreover, such people are also deprived of proper healthcare, which only increases the issues (Williams, Richard & Sandler, 2007).

In relation to the determinant of social exclusion, the system of health services mostly ignores the diversity of the population; particularly referred to sexual orientation. Social exclusion describes the structures and dynamic process of inequity between groups in society refers to the inability of certain groups to participate fully in civic life due to structural inequities of access to social resources, economic, political and cultural (Shankle, 2006). These inequities arise from oppression related to race, social class, gender, disability, sexual orientation, immigrant status and religion. These groups include people of various ethnic groups, immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities, single parents, children, women living in disadvantaged older people, careers not employed, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health Issues, 2011).
