Health Information Tracking-Past, Present, and Future
Introduction
Analyzing the present societies, it has been recognized that there has been rapid changes in our societies. Where, there has been a notified progress in the fields of medicine, along with informatics since last decades (Haux, Ammenwerth, Herzog, Knaup, 2002). The biggest advantage of these developments and progress is that our expectancy of life nowadays due to the consequences of research, is considerably higher than few decades before. According to United Nation studies, it is recognized that in year 1950, 8% of the population of world is of age 60 and older, in 2000 it was 10%, and in 2050 it will be 21%. It was recorded that in 1950, 12 persons between the age of 15 and 60 were n relation to a single person older than 60 years of age, know as potential support ration, which was 9:1 ration in 2000, and it is estimated to be 4:1 in year 2050 (United Nations,2001).
Information systems of hospitals have been in existence since two decades from now, therefore, speaking of past is made possible. Information systems of hospitals have contributed in the extension towards examining the features, which are observable throughout this evolution, and it propose to project present observations in to future. These lines of Professor Peter Reichertz (1930-1987) were explained in Euro MISE 2004 conference at Prague, where he gave an exceptional lecture regarding the “hospitals information systems-past, present, and future”.
Discussion
After two decades, referring to lecture of Peter Reichertz, but today considering in terms of health information systems (HIS), we discuss two imparities quotations: (1) what are lines of development from the past until today in health information systems?; and(2) what are the foreseen consequences in future of health information systems? (Haux, Kulikowski, 2003).
The lines of development considered important for HIS (Health Information Systems) are: (1) the shift to computer based storage and processing from paper based processing and storage; (2) the utilization of HIS data for administrative purpose, along with patient care; (3) the shift from institution-centered departmental; (4) the shift of focus to strategic information management; (5) the inclusion of patients and health consumers as HIS users; (6) the inclusion of new technologies; and (7) the shift to data on the molecular level.
