US President's Health Care System Proposal

US President's Health Care System Proposal

Introduction

President Obama is committed to working with Congress to pass comprehensive health reform in his first year in order to control rising costs of medical care, to guarantee the choice of a doctor and provide high quality, affordable health care for all Americans. Comprehensive health care reform can no longer wait. The rapid growth of medical costs is crushing families, businesses and government budgets. Employer support for health insurance premiums have doubled over the past 9 years, a rate of 3 times faster than the total increase in wages. This makes the family sit around the kitchen table to make impossible choices between paying rent and payment of medical premiums. Given all that we spend on health, American families should not be presented with this choice (Baer 2008).

The United States spent about $ 2.2 trillion on health care in 2007 or $ 7421 per person is almost twice the average of other developed countries(Gorin 2009, pp 99-190). Americans spend more on health care than on housing and meals (Liebow 2008). In the case of rapid growth in medical costs will continue, the Congressional Budget Office believes that by 2025 one out of every four dollars in our national economy will be tied to the health care system. This increased burden will be limited to investment and other priorities that are necessary for the growth of our economy. Increased costs for medical care also have an impact on our economic competitiveness in the global economy, and American companies compete with companies from other countries, which significantly reduces the cost of health care (Baer 2008).

Discussion

Election of Democrat Barack Obama ushers in a new administration that is all but certain to include a certain level of health care reform. Less clear how extensive that the reform will be and when it comes. In the Illinois senator proposed a radical change in the health care system aimed at providing health coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. But experts say that the current financial crisis makes drastic changes are unlikely to soon(Baer 2008).The President promised that the reform of the health system, will differ in its administration of an open, inclusive and transparent process where all ideas, and urged all parties to work together to find a way out of the health crisis. Working together with members of Congress, doctors and hospitals, businesses and trade unions, and other key health care stakeholders, the president determined to do that we finally enact comprehensive health reform. The Administration believes that comprehensive health reform is necessary:

Reducing the long-term growth in health-care costs for businesses and government

protect the family from bankruptcy, or debt due to the costs of medical care

Guarantee choice of doctors and health plans

Investment in prevention and wellness

Improving patient safety and quality of care

Provision of affordable, quality health care for all Americans(Liebow 2008)
