Abstract

Mental health and mental state be familiar with in general terms, as the condition of equilibrium among a person and their socio-cultural surroundings which assure their labor force contribution, academic and association to attain well-being and quality of life. Thus, in the context of this paper the case of an African American mother who suffered from post partum depression was inculcated.

Introduction

Health, either mental or physical and infirmity have diverse observations and perspectives in different cultures and different economic, social and psychological contexts. There also are some associations between different social factors and illnesses that prevail with in communities and need to be studied and discussed. Living in Broward County, one tends to come across several concerns and healthcare problems as the county is rendered as the second most populous county of the state. Broward County, also infuses itself among the there counties which form Miami metropolitan area(Christy et al, 2005). The population of Broward County inculcates a majority of white people which mounts to around 70.57 %. Whereas, African-Americans formulates the minority chunk of the county, as the Black population of the county stands at 21 percent. Therefore, in the context of this paper Black population of the Broward County will be in focus.

Discussion

Experiential Experience

As a resident of Broward County, I do understand the nomenclature of the country, thus it became easier for me to relate to the assignment. As white forms the majority of the population residing in Broward County, thus they tend to enjoy a much elevated access to healthcare. As I was admitted to Margate Hospital, I did observe the existing biasness in the attitudes of the doctors and nurses when they tend to treat a patient belonging to an African-American Population. Not only African-Americans are exposed to healthcare biasness rather, Hispanics too were subjugated to biasness in healthcare(McGaha et al, 2002). However, since African-Americans had a distinct culture, values, norms and physical features they were thought as outsiders by the doctors and nurses belonging to white population. Not only the healthcare biases towards the African-Americans exist as far as heart diseases are concerned but also for cancer, diabetes, HIV/Aids and etc. However, my experience relates to a depression rendered as Post Partum depression.
