The Role of Healing Hospitals

Introduction

Healing process is a divine action that fulfills the need of a sufferer. Healing hospital approach is different from conventional hospitals in which patients are treated as entities and routine. Healing reminds us all of Jesus. He felt the sufferings of the ailing humanity and healed them regardless their faith and creed. The concept has the same divine reflection. In this essay, I will attempt to explain the concept with the help of live examples and practices at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. It is easier to relate the theoretical concepts with actual practices (Healing Trust Names Top Ten Healing Hospitals, 2009).

Components of Healing Hospitals and Spirituality

A Healing Physical Environment

This first concept with the care takes care of the elements imperative to providing care to the patient. Here, not only the patient but his family should also receive care from the trained staff as caregivers. The management teaches their staff how to become loving, considerate and make the environment aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for the patient and his family. The stress that not only the patient experiences but his family has to go through holds substantial impact on the entire process of healing. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center encourages an exclusively soothing environment that provides with healing for the incoming patients. Besides that, they also maintain a stress free and candid working environment for the staff and consultants. The point is that not only the patient and his family should receive care, but also the staff should feel enthusiastic, cared and valued while helping the patients heal (Haggard & Hosking, 2002).

The Incorporation of Work Design and Technology

This is a second imperative component that makes the staff well equipped with the needed technology that can help them achieve their targets in the best possible manner. The staff at Mercy Gilbert is responsible of providing patients with the required privacy and security. They have a separate department that deals with updating their technological demands and expertise. The job description of the staff may change within a span of time in order to best match with the newly discovered technology. This is an initiative towards preserving the patient's dignity throughout the period of his hospitalization. Under these hospitals provide patients with some inspirational reading material, music and other recreational activities. This actually speeds up the process of healing and helps in reducing a patient's anxiety (Chapman, 2003).

A Culture of Radical Loving Care

This third component embraces a particular culture of Radical Loving Care. This is, in fact, a philosophy presented by healthcare commerce leader, Erie Chapman. Chapman suggests that the staff or the workers have to be reminded again and again about the purpose they came to healthcare system. At Mercy Gilbert center, the management encourages staff to adopt a holistic approach to meet not only the patient physical environmental needs but do something more. The Radical environment takes place when all the staff members join in a commitment to create an environment of care by focusing on every ...
