Hazardous Materials

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a well known agency of America that is operated under the e United States Department of Labor. The agency was developed under the Occupational Safety and Health Act December 29, 1970 by the political party of America known as Congress by President Richard M. Nixon.

Element 1: Written Policies and Procedures

The mission of the agency stated as under:

To ensure the safety and the healthfulness under the provided working conditions for the men and the women working in any organization by providing and enforcing standards through education, training, outreach, and assistance.

According to the Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act) it is the responsibility of the state to encourage, operate and develop the health plans and job safety. These plans are provided on OSHA programs and manuals approved under the section 18(b) of the OSH Act. The standards are adopted and all the basics requirements are enforced that equivalent to the federal requirements.

Standards of Conduct

The actual OSHA standard, 1910.1200(a) (1) says,

All the chemicals and materials that are hazardous should be enlisted that are used in any organization. Further the hazards that are expected by these materials should be available and written on these materials. The precautions and the necessary measure that should be under taken must be proficient by means of hazard training programs. This will include many steps like labeling the containers and all the other necessary warnings and instructions. Other requirements like material safety data sheets and trainings of the employees should be addressed (U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, 1991).

Risk Areas

The risk areas that address the hazardous material are all the areas that labor comes in contact with at their work. The risk area regarding the hazardous material entirely dependent upon the typology of material handling like Spill or leak procedures, handling the container of the materials, piping used to transfer these material and logistics of these materials.

Element 2: Hazardous Materials under OSHA standard and manuals

OSHA has defined hazardous chemical or materials as any solid or liquids or gases that could be a threat for the health of the employees. There are many examples of the hazardous materials will include degreasers paints, aerosols, greases, pesticides, flammables, compressed gases and cleaning agents. This will also include many solid, liquids or the gases that produced as the by-product from any industry (The actual OSHA standard, 1910.1200(f) (5)). The manuals of OSHA also indentify the materials that are considered to be hazardous for the human health and safety.
