Hawthorne Study

Introduction

The term Hawthorne effect was introduced by Elton mayo in 1950. It means the change in participant's behavior when he is being observed which is may be “related only to the special social situation and social treatment they received”. All definitions included some or the other reference to behavior change or performance. Only two definitions stated that this change was not permanent with one of the definition being interpreted by “The psychological literature indicates that Hawthorne effects may last anywhere from a few days to 2 years, depending on the situation” (Muchinsky, 2003, p. 12).
