Growing Number of Refugees

Introduction

The term refugee is best defined as people that are owing to a fear of persecution on the basis of race, nationality, religion, alliance with a specific social group or people having a certain political opinion (Bernstein, 1999). Mainly there are two types of refugees for example one category is of people who leave their home country with the intention of crossing into the neighbouring country. The first category is of people who move in their own country but to a different part of the country. The second category is usually called displaced people or internal refugees (Hathaway, 2005).

It is often argued by many people and there is also a slight doubt that whether the problem of refugees is too serious and a global problem or not. While it is quite obvious that the most immediate effect of this problem is on the developing countries, it is strongly argued that developed and industrialized nations should contribute in this problem by not limiting immigration and by allowing more immigrants (Sen, 1993). There are many causes of refugees for example natural disasters, political instability and poverty etc and this problem hass many negative effects too.

Discussion

The utmost reason why developed countries and nations should contribute towards this problem is because now days we all stay in a global village which makes it impossible to ignore the culture, standard of living and technological changes on the other part of the same world. Media has played an important role in creating such awareness as it is easily accessible to everyone regardless of their culture, political view and race etc.
