Develop the Physical Group Living Environment to Promote Positive Outcomes for Individuals

The person centred care is a new approach which has became increasingly popular with the care professionals. The strategies and techniques applied in this approach have allowed the individuals to start living independently. However, there are certain individuals who would still require a certain amount of support from their carers; these individuals are moved to a residential accommodation or group living arrangements to ensure that they are properly taken care of. In the eighteenth century, the Industrial Revolution resulted in a disturbance of the status quo as the movement led to a significant number of the individuals moving into the towns and cities in search of the work. Due to this the traditional health systems faced numerous risks and there were only few options available for the individuals to access health which was in large asylums or through workhouse systems. Gradually, these asylums became a place for holding the patients with mental illness. This was a time in which the individuals with mental illness or disabilities were provided help in-house or in the asylums. Abuse and neglect was prevalent in that era. Not until during 1960s and 1970s, did this issue come to light. The media highlighted this negative behaviour and treatment of the individuals with mental health problems and/ or disabilities. Gibson (1991) recognized that by finding out about a person's life history, it could be used in care-planning and put into practice with reminiscence therapy. May et al (2009) say that life story can often shed light on situations helping others to understand why a person is behaving or reacting to events in the way that they are. As a residential manager, I believe in providing my service users the three major core conditions that are considered essential for effective person centered counseling, which are:

Congruence

Empathy

Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR)

The above mentioned three core elements are essential for ensuring that the patient gets good care. The most important of these elements is congruence. This means that the counselor needs to ensure ...
