Grenadian Communities

Introduction

The island of Grenada lies between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean, about 200 km northeast of the coast of Venezuela and south of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The state consists of several islands in the archipelago of the Grenadines, part of the archipelago of the Lesser Antilles of which the island Grenada itself is the largest, smaller islands are Carriacou , Petite Martinique , Ronde Iceland, Caille Iceland, Diamond Iceland, Large Iceland, Saline Iceland, Auntie Les and Frigate Iceland. The northern border of the Grenadines is part of the neighboring state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The majority of the population lives on the main island of Grenada, where the capital city of St. George's lies and the towns of Grenville and Gouyave. The largest settlement on the smaller islands is Hillsborough on Carriacou. The islands are of volcanic origin and have very fertile soils. The interior of the island of Grenada is very mountainous. The highes point is Mount Saint Catherine with the height of 840m above sea level. In the mountains spring numerous small rivers. The climate is tropical: hot and humid in the rainy season and slightly cooler in the dry season. Grenada is located at the southern edge of the hurricane belt and has spent the last 50 years suffering only three hurricanes; however, two of them hit Grenada since 2004.

The Spanish colonized the island, however, in the beginning of 17th century, British attempted to colonize the island but they had to withdraw the forces in 1609. Similarly, by 1649 local chiefs sold the island to French traders. The French conquered the island with the power of militarily, while the Caribbean population was almost completely eradicated. The French named the new colony "La Grenade" (later by the British "Grenada") and in 1650 founded the capital and port city, "Fort Royal", which later became St. George's , which soon developed into the most important French naval base in the Caribbean.

The island remained under French domain until its conquest by the British in the Seven Years War in 1762. While Grenada was in the 1763 Treaty of Paris ceded to the United Kingdom, the French gave up but not yet lost their former ...
