Introduction

The family was a fundamental institution in ancient Athens. It consisted of a husband, wife and children (nuclear family). A family was dependent on relatives and slaves, because of its economic unity. The main function of the family was to engender new citizens. Strict laws and stipulated citizens to engage in legally recognized marriages, consisting of two Athenian citizens. Women became second-class citizens within many of the Greek city states—including Athens. Arguably, this second-class status for women occurred, despite the presence of some powerful goddesses within their religion.
