Gap in the Market for Popular Graphic Novels in Turkey

Introduction

Novels have been a major part of knowledge gathering in Turkey. People of Turkey have considered novels as a source of gaining significant ideas even with the extent of electronic media (Mulvey, 2010). The advent of novels in Turkey is linked back with the 18th century, however globalization and technological development has changed the current outlook of how novels currently look. According to Cunningham, Quinn and Weekes (2010), in its present form, novels are more liked with graphic images and this has created a major market for popular graphic novels in Turkey. The increase in number of customers for graphic novels has thus created an enhanced level of demand.

In the view of Korkut (2011), the unsaturated form of market structure has enabled graphic novel production, innovation, competition and capital investment. Hence, a profound change has been established in the recent Turkish graphic novel publishing industry. As the market of Graphic Novels in Turkey is still unsaturated, therefore a gap in the market has been created. Tackling the situation of market gap has become a major issue for modern novel publishing associations. To counter such plunge, novel publishing associations have started to look for foreign imports and investors. According to Archer (2010), the gap in the market of graphic novels can be positively impacted through the use of foreign support where modern communication technology can play a significant role. Although, the foreign imports can impact the Turkish contemporary culture with the integration of other cultures, as the graphic novels are imported (Andersen, Powell & Blecha, 2009).

RQ1: What is the impact of the gap in the market of graphic novels?

RQ2: What are the factors responsible for creating a gap in the market of graphic novels?

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this research is to explore the gap in the market for popular graphic novels in Turkey. In addition, following are the objectives of this research:

To determine the factors that are associated with the gap in the market of graphic novels

To find out the relation between demand and supply of graphic novels in Turkey

To evaluate the methods that can be adopted to minimize market gap

Structure of the Dissertation

This research will focus on gap in the market for popular graphic novels in Turkey. The study comprises of the following sections:

The first chapter introduces the topic of the research and provides the background, research scope, aims and objectives, research questions and time scale for the study.
