Executive Summary

Epilepsy is one of the growing concerns in Liverpool Sydney. The awareness programs on the community level are imperative to create awareness and to advice on the best treatment method. Epilepsy is a brain disorder which happens due to the cluster of neurons in the brain give out wrong signals. Neurons normally generate electrochemical impulses that act in other neurons, glands and muscles to produce human thoughts, feelings and actions. In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity is disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions and behaviour or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms and coma. During a seizure, the neurons can fire up to 500 times a second, much faster than normal. In some people, this happens only occasionally, for others it can happen hundreds of times a day. Keeping in view the severity of the disease, the main objectives of the grant applicants are:

To provide knowledge about epilepsy and its treatment through the awareness programs.

To test the feasibility of treating epilepsy at the primary care level with the use of the antiepileptic drugs.

To action plan for these objectives a comprehensive plan is set to not only increase awareness of epilepsy but also to evaluate the existing treatment methods that are most convenient and effective for the patients. These options will bring the community and the health practitioners on the same platform to reduce the prevalence of Epilepsy.

In simple terms, a seizure is a neurological event during which normal brain messaging is interrupted by chaotic ...
