PERT technique for altering or enhancing steps associated with reengineering.

PERT technique is mostly used in project management and commonly as a conjunction with the method of Critical Path also known as Critical Path Method (CPM). The basic objectives of PERT were to make better decision so that the time, technical performance and resources can be allocated properly and it can also be developed in a better way. When we talk about reengineering and PERT we will find that the PERT method helps the economy to analyze the initial needs and then utilize the available resources to gain benefit in the term of time and technical performance. The basic aim of PERT is to analyze the time that will be required by an organization or group of people to complete certain process (Klingel, 1966).

Basic Information About PERT

PERT was invented for the Defense department of US Navy in 1958 by Booz Allen. It was launched for the submarine project with ballistic missile. It is used with CPM so that proper analysis can be done. As we all know that time is the most scare resource in the world therefore there was a need of a analysis system which can help the organization to analyze the need of time that is required to complete a particular tasks. This method is not for small project as it has its own monetary and time cost. Therefore organization working on large scale construction projects uses this method (Cleland & King, 1968).

The PERT method involves first:

A precise cutting of the project into tasks;

The estimated duration of each task;

The appointment of a project manager responsible for project monitoring, reporting and if necessary to make decisions in case of deviation from the forecasts (Klingel, 1966).

PERT Event

It is a point which is used to mark the initializing point and completion of a task. Though it does not consume any time or resource but still it is important as it is all the units and activities are attached to that particular event. The main works of PERT event start after all the tasks are completed (Cleland & King, 1968).

Predecessor Event

It is an event which is preceded immediately another event. The next event may be the consequence or reason of the predecessor event (Klingel, 1966).

Successor Event

An event that comes just after the second event is known as the successor event. It is the consequences of another activity (Cleland & King, 1968).

PERT Activity

PERT activity is referred to the performance of task in actual. It consumes different resources, time and other things which are associated with different tasks. All tasks are combined together for different set of activities resulting in a particular task (Klingel, 1966).

The PERT (sometimes called PERT graph) is composed of the following

Task (sometimes activity or step), represented by an arrow. Each task has a code and duration. Nevertheless, the length of the arrow is independent of the duration.

Step, that is to say, the beginning and end of a task. Each task has a step of beginning and an end ...
