Two graduate students, Larry and Sergey, of Stanford computer science collaborated for the development the search engine which was named as BackRub. It was named BackRub because it referred to algorithms where backlinks were considered as affirmative votes. For more than a year, BackRub has served the Stanford servers, where it took much of its time to expand the bandwidth for the university.
