Good, Bad and their Impact on the Transition from Student Nurse to Graduate Nurse

Abstract

The period in which a student of nursing becomes a graduate nurse and then a nurse practitioner is filled with anxiety and stress for the nurse who is graduated. According to a theory, if a graduate nurse is under the guidance of an experienced nurse then it can help in reducing the anxiety and depression. Furthermore, it can also assist in attaining a widespread and safe nursing practice. Much research has been done to find out the advantages and consequences of guidance of an experienced nurse to a newly graduated nurse. The effects on the success of the nurse which help her in becoming a nurse practitioner from a graduate nurse are also studied. A preceptor can be helpful in enhancing the quality of care provided, decreasing anxiety and stress from the nurses, enhances the job satisfaction, retention and productivity of a nurse. On the other hand, a bad preceptor plays his role in increasing the distress, frustration, anxiety, lack of job satisfaction, reduces the quality of care, separation of the nurse graduate and finally produces the lack of interest in the profession. Many benefits can be achieved to all parties by developing a strong relationship between a preceptor and a nurse. The benefits that can be achieved are increase in productivity rate in terms of nurse and preceptor. A high rate of retention can also be achieved which means that the cost of staff replacement has been reduced down. It can also be recommended that all the health organizations produced a path way for the assurance of positive preceptors. An experienced preceptor will help in increasing the number of graduate nurses, will increase the job interest in nurses and will guide them in providing an environment of quality care to the patient.

Literature review

After the completion of nurse training, a student is converted into a graduate nurse and the period of conversion from a student nurse to a graduate nurse can be very stressful for them. A number of students can be successful in converting from a student nurse to a graduate nurse. Many of other students will not be able to become a graduate nurse from a student. It has further been proved from different evidences that a preceptor plays an important role in conversion from a student to a graduate nurse. According to Hill and Swatzky (2011) preceptors are defined to be having a strong relationship between a new nurse practitioner and to a very experienced nurse practitioner. The relationship thus developed is also useful in promotion of a social behavior and success in the new graduate nurse. Researchers are able to identify several advantages of a good preceptor on the graduate nurse and the negative influences of a preceptor on the graduate nurse. The following literature review will help in identifying the positive and negative aspects of the environment ...
