A genetically modified organism refers to an organism whose genetic material is altered by using different genetic engineering techniques. The organisms that are genetically modified often include micro-organisms i.e. yeast insects, bacteria and other mammals (Benbrook, 2004). The techniques of genetic engineering are used to isolate segments consist of DNA (genetic material) for introduction into the genome (hereditary material) of other, either by using as other living vector capable of inoculating DNA fragments (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a bacterium ) either by bombarding the cells with DNA coated microparticles to these provisions, or other physical methods such as electric shock to allow DNA fragments penetrate into the interior of the core, through cell membranes.
What Practices are Detrimental to GMO
There have been numerous complaints and lawsuits around the world related to the harmful effect on plants and animals of GMOs or pesticides (such as glyphosate and other) used therein, that because many genes that have GMOs enable resist strong chemicals that kill other herbs (including so-called "bad"). GMOs are also not requiring synthetic pesticides because they contain genes that produce a natural insecticide, but its effect would also be negative for other species and related ecosystems (Pedgette, 1996).
Thesis Statement
“GMO is a devastating practice for Economics and Nutrition”.
Nutritional Argument
In a report published by the EC Joint Research Centre (2006) asserted that the coexistence of crops and GM tends to be quite feasible in most cases. The report asserted that such a standard can be achieved easily (Mepham, 2008, pp. 244). The nutritional argument of GMO was also discussed in the report; it suggested that:
GMOs are present in most seeds used in cultivation
The process of out-crossing pollen from neighborhood fields to GM plants depends on the field size, prevailing winds and the concerned crop.
Ultimate Effects on the Body
Cost
In a broader perspective, the yields of GM crops are often low as compared to non-GM crops. Due to a sudden decline in Gm prices i.e. herbicides used with HT soya. By growing Bacillus thuringinesis (bt) maize has become less profitable than non-Gm crops (Mepham, 2008, pp. 249).
GMOs & Allergies
There seems to be a consensus among scientists that GM crops cause allergies. However, no standardized tests can be applied to check if the GM crop is safe. It is primarily because people do not realize that they are allergic to a certain food unless they have consumed it a number of times.
Economic Argument
The economic costs in the field of bioethics play a major role. Vital decisions need to be made on the regulations and compensations offered to farmers; if their crops are contaminated with GM materials. However, the authorities need to determine the degree to which organic farmers can reduce cross contamination. The implementation of decent insurance policies should also be looked at to improve the performance of farming sector.
Toxicity Levels of GMO
Food safety regulations for GMO crops have always been a major issue. The question whether GMO can improve our health is still debatable ...
