How do global health issues affect Mauritius? What are the main positive and negative effects?

Mauritius is though a small island but its developing towards the life goodness like developed countries, and this is clearly reflected by the improved health state of its population. The global health issues are affecting Mauritius like any other country in the world, the major reported issues includes, obesity, infections due to climatic conditions, increasing number of diabetics, stressed behaviors , diseases that are transmitted by the animals or insects, by water, food and environment, and by contacting people who are physically infected.. Drug addiction and chronic diseases are still challenging the Mauritians. These global health issues are affecting the population and tourism of the island. Tourism is the main source of revenue for the island, but these increasingly reported health issue and severe infection affecting the tourists and decrease the value of tourism here. Another important health issue with the people in Mauritius is that they spend more time on their jobs, which means they rely heavily on fast food, and the resultant is obesity. The changing climatic conditions put a rise in the health problems, in 2006, a mosquito borne disease called Chikungunya affect the population heavily (Schnall, David J., and Carl & Figliola., 2013).

These health issue somewhere affect the Mauritius in a positive way as well, compared to the past health state Mauritians now have better health facilities to combat the diseases and infections. Mauritians were having so much to celebrate on their 40th independence day because the life expectancy rate increased to 75.6 for men and 68.7 years for women from the average of 59 by the record of 1968 and the rate of infant mortality decreased to 14 from 70 for every thousand births in 2006. Although the improved facilities for the treatment of health problems are available, instead there are some old time diseases that are still following the Mauritians which mainly include Malaria, Diphtheria, small pox and whooping cough. The major reason for this is the prevailing poverty and poor purchasing power of the island. But the better health state programs also helped increasing the per person income by $200 and raised it to US $7000 in 2008. The employment rate of Mauritius also increased up to 8.8% in the same year. All of these global health issues are affecting the health state of Mauritius as well the tourism and revenue making activities as the improved but doubted state of the island is still suspicious for the world's health organizations and for the tourists (Dickenson-Hazard, 2009).
