Introduction

The chief objective of this essay is to identify and discuss current trends in global demographics which provide impetus to workforce diversity. Moreover, evaluation will be made of specific trends in national demographic such as, age, gender, religion, belief and disability. In the second part of the essay, discussion will be made on the impediments which are being faced by certain groups of people in the organization in their career which are being tagged as “Glass ceiling” and “Glass cliff”.

Current global demographic trends

The increased global population has posed serious challenges to the global employers. They find it a difficult task to recruit people who possess the best talent. With the increase of global population, talented and qualified candidates are shrinking. This has also felt by the emerging business markets such as China and Russia. According to the current facts and figures, the war among the global companies for skilled and competent employees will further exacerbate and employer have to devise new means to attract capable employees (Ragins, et.al,1998). In order to better understand the global demographic trends, it is pivotal to comprehend about the size and composition of the working class population and understand the factors which shape the demographic all over the world. According to the statistics, the population of the world has grown to 7 Billion in 2010 which is increasing at an alarming rate. There has been decline in the competent and qualified workforce over the period of time, considering the increase in the population. The organizations are exploring the potential employees in markets other than their home country. According to the survey of UN, the population of the world will reached 8.3 billion in 2030. This increase in the global population is not proportionately with the regions. The population of least developed countries is increasing at a faster pace than the developed countries.

The indiscriminate growth of the population has created a workforce gap due to the non-availability of the talented workforce in the organizations. There is a short fall from the supply side and the demand is increasing day by day for competent and professional workforce due to the population aging. More people are retiring from the organization than entering and it has created a huge gap. In the markets of Europe, more employees have sought retirement than the one who joined the organizations. According to the estimated figures, by the end of 2020, more people will be at the age of their retirement in the large economies such as Canada, China, Russia and South Korea. There seems a huge discrepancy in the skills of the employers and the available talent. In this scenario, countries where education standard is high and equipped with modern tool will generate more potential, qualified and competent candidates than the countries where education standard is poor.
