Introduction

The continuation of armed conflict, the progress of epidemics and worsening poverty mark the recent history of Africa and contribute to the economic isolation of the continent. Some nations achieve relative political stability and development: the case of South Africa, which accounts for a fifth of African GDP, thanks the export of gold, iron ore, diamond and coal and massive investments in the industrial park, and the Arab countries of Africa called White north, such as Libya, Algeria and Egypt, where the economy is based on oil and natural gas.

Meanwhile, Sub-Saharan Africa, covering the countries of the Black population located south of the Sahara desert, is the only area of the planet that regressed economically in relation to the 60. The continent is also marked by ethno-religious conflicts, both among tribes and clans in Black Africa, and among fundamentalist guerrillas and the government in Islamic countries. The rich reserves of minerals in Africa, with enormous potential to boost economic development, are working instead as an engine of some conflicts.

The result is that 260 of the 600 million people in Africa live up to a dollar per day, below the poverty line set by the World Bank.

Driven by the growth of South Africa, the SADC economic bloc (formed by 14 countries) is establishing itself as the continent's most promising pole.
